After beginning the season with high expectations, things have not gone as planned in Year 3 for Brent Pry at Virginia Tech. A team with a ton of retainment along with some transfer portal additions and a strong finish to 2023 had a lot of chatter about the Hokies entering 2024.

The season has not gone as planned and as they enter Week 14 at 5-6 and needing a win at Lane Stadium against Virginia, who is also 5-6 and needs a win to reach a bowl, and not many people, if any, envisioned when the season started. There have been several factors for why Virginia Tech is in the position they’re in. One question that has hovered over the program lately is the future of Pry in Blacksburg and one college football writer may have painted a picture of what the future holds.

Pete Nakos of On3 has an interesting take on Brent Pry’s future

Just what Pry’s future looks like at Virginia Tech is unknown, but Pete Nakos of On3 reported that moving on from the former Penn State defensive coordinator might come with another move. Here is what Nakos wrote,

"Now in Year Three at Virginia Tech, Brent Pry team is 5-6 and 3-4 in the ACC with another win needed for bowl eligibility. A buyout would require 70% of Pry’s remaining base salary plus incentives, or about $11 million. Can Virginia Tech pay that if they want to make a move? Sources have also told On3 that athletic director Whit Babcock’s future could be tied to Pry’s, meaning that Virginia Tech might not make a coaching change this season. The Hokies have their rivalry game with Virginia slated for Saturday night.''

That is not a surprising report. Babcock and Pry being a package deal, if it indeed comes down to that, it would have to be the move the school makes. It would be very surprising if Pry indeed was fired after the season. He has got three years and despite the program not making the expected jump in 2024, he’s going to get at least one or two more years. What might need to be assessed is his assistant coaches and the possibility of bringing in coaches with more coaching experience, even head coaching experience. Pry is 15-20 (9-13 in the ACC) at Tech and is 1-12 in one-score games.

Saturday night’s result against Virginia might hold a lot of weight for some people, but it appears it might not for Pry, but again, time will tell.
