Virginia Tech Football Opens as Big Favorite Over Virginia
By Scott Roche
After both the Virginia and Virginia Tech football teams lost their games on Saturday, they each sit at 5-6 going into the regular season final at Lane Stadium next Saturday night. The two teams had different expectations going into the season and the Hokies are on the verge of a complete disaster ending to the 2024 campaign.
Beginning the season with an eye toward the new 12-team College Football Playoff, Virginia Tech needs a win over the Cavaliers to save some face of their season and become bowl-eligible. If they lose, then things get very interesting over the next couple of weeks and months.
Both teams suffered key injuries in their losses on Saturday leaving a lot of status' in doubt. The Hokies, began the game against Duke with quarterback Kyron Drones on the sideline in street clothes, then on the final play of the first quarter, they lost backup Collin Schlee for the rest of the night to an injury. In came freshman Pop Watson who nearly led them to a come-from-behind victory over Duke. Now with a ton of questions surrounding the health of players going into the Commonwealth Cup, it didn't stop betting sites from making Brent Pry's team a favorite.
Virginia Tech opens a big favorite over Virginia
According to FanDuel, Virginia Tech opens as a 7.5 favorite over Virginia next Saturday night at Lane Stadium with an over/under of 48.5 points. That line is somewhat surprising considering all the injuries, especially at quarterback for Pry's team.
Virginia Tech playing for their season in this game was not on a lot of people's bingo card when the season began, but here we are, another season where the result against the Cavaliers determines whether or not the Hokies get another month of football or begin a long and cold off-season in Blacksburg.
