Through the first two weeks of the season for the Virginia Tech football team, it has been nothing but frustration for both the players and the fanbase. Losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt have the Hokies sitting a 0-2 in what is a pivotal season for many, including head coach Brent Pry.
It's not so much the losses at are frustrating to a pair of SEC schools, but it's about how they have happened. Against the Gamecocks, Virginia Tech hung around and was only trailing by two points entering the fourth quarter, 10-8, when South Carolina broke it open with two touchdowns on their way to a 24-11 victory.
Then last weekend against the Commodores in Blacksburg, leading Vandy 20-10 at halftime, Virginia Tech imploded in the second half, being outscored 34-0, and looked tired in what was a 44-20 beatdown. Now they look to right the ship this weekend at home against Old Dominion, which poses a major obstacle for Pry and his team.
Old Dominion QB Colton Joseph could make Virginia Tech's life miserable on Saturday night
If there is one thing we know about the Brent Pry era, among many things, it is that running quarterbacks have been a problem for them to stop. Dare we say it's been one of his kryptonites in Blacksburg? Enter Old Dominion QB Colton Joseph, who just happens to be the leading FBS quarterback rusher in college football through the first two weeks. What could possibly go wrong?
His numbers are not ones that were done against two lesser programs. Well, maybe one, but against 20th-ranked Indiana on the road in Week 1, Joseph had 10 carries for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 27-14 loss. Last week against North Carolina Central in a 54-6 win, he had 12 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Containing quarterbacks who are dangerous running the ball has been an issue for Virginia Tech, and for a team in dire need of a win this week, this is less than ideal for the Hokies. I mean, again, what could possibly go wrong?
