After losing the season opener to South Carolina, the hot seat got warm for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry. He was facing a must-win game on Saturday night in Blacksburg in the home opener against Vanderbilt.

Things looked promising at halftime as the Hokies went in with a 20-10 lead, but there were still 30 minutes for Pry and Virginia Tech. It ended up being an unforgettable 30 minutes and maybe the worst 30 minutes of his tenure as head coach of the Hokies. The Commodores embarrassed the hosts to the tune of outscoring them 34-0 in what turned into a 44-20 victory.

Brent Pry's seat is even hotter after loss to Vanderbilt

Let's just say that the seat is hotter and Pry is living on the edge with his job.

Here is how we gauge the meter,

  • Freezing
  • Cold
  • Neutral
  • Warm
  • On Fire

Where does Brent Pry fall on the meter?

Hot Seat: On Fire

There really is no other way to describe it. Last week, Vegas oddsmakers gave him the top odds to be the first coach fired this year, and Saturday night did nothing to change that theory. It was the worst possible outcome for Pry and his staff. What happened in the second half sums up really what the last three-plus years have been. Aside from a strong finish to the 2023 season that saw Virginia Tech become bowl-eligible and get a ton of retention, it has been a tough tenure for Pry in Blacksburg.

What the future holds for Pry in Blacksburg remains to be seen. It certainly feels like the end of his tenure is only a matter of time. Virginia Tech has two more non-conference games at home against Old Dominion and Wofford before ACC play begins on Sept. 27 at North Carolina State. A lot has to change beginning this week against the Monarchs.
