It was reported last month that Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young was going to have a bigger NIL package to work with this offseason. After a mass exodus last season in the portal, the veteran coach did not have the resources to compete with other schools when it came to recruiting through the portal.
So far this season, Young has done a good job in terms of retaining players from this past season, with Ben Hammond, Jaden Schutt, and Tyler Johnson returning. Transfer portal additions so far are two good ones in Amani Hansberry and Izaiah Pasha. Tobi Lawal announced that he's entering the NBA Draft while also maintaining his college eligibility to return if he withdraws from the draft and plays his senior year for the Hokies.
Young is still interested in a lot of players in the portal, and a new target has emerged for Virginia Tech, and it's a talented guard.
Southern Illinois guard Kennard David, Jr. has become a transfer portal target for Virginia Tech
Southern Illinois guard Kennard David, Jr. entered the transfer portal and is becoming one of the top guards transferring. This past season for the Salukis, he averaged 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists a game while shooting 46% from the field. In the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, he dropped 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists in an 86-85 win over Indiana State in the quarterfinals.
Kennard Davis Jr. has recently been in contact with the following programs, he tells TPR:

In 32 games this season, he reached double figures 29 times and he would be a huge addition to the Hokies' backcourt after Brandon Rechsteiner entered the portal and committed to Colorado State. Davis, Jr. would provide needed scoring from the backcourt, but the Hokies will be up against in terms of recruiting with some good programs also in the mix.
