We are a couple of weeks into the college basketball transfer portal window and so far, six Virginia Tech men's players have entered. To offset the players leaving, head coach Mike Young has already got a commitment from West Virginia transfer Amani Hansberry.
Last week, two key freshmen who found their way into the starting lineup this past season, Ben Hammond and Tyler Johnson, announced that they were going to run it back next season with the Hokies. There were still a few key players who had not announced their intentions as of yet, but Monday afternoon, one them announced their future plans.
Virginia Tech guard Jaden Schutt announces plans for 2025-26 season
Last May, Young got a commitment from Duke transfer Jaden Schutt. It was a struggle for the Illinois native in Durham as he dealt with injuries, which hampered his time with the Blue Devils. He committed to Virginia Tech and became a starter and played well, even though he was inconsistent at times.
On Monday, he announced on his Instagram page that he would return to Virginia Tech for next season. This season, he averaged 7.7 points a game and shot 37% from the field. He shot 36% from behind the arc, which was one of his strengths. He struggled down the stretch in the season with injuries and an illness, but when he was going well, he was arguably their best shooter.
Schutt coming back gives Young a shooter in the backcourt who has a year under his belt with Hammond as the two of them started a majority of the games this season after New Year's when Hammond became the starter. With Johnson, Schutt, and Hammond back in the fold, all eyes turn toward Tobi Lawal and his decision as to whether he returns or enters the portal.
