When he was hired at Virginia Tech, Brent Pry knew an area he needed to have success in if he was going to turn around things was recruiting. As time has gone on, he has mended the relationships within the state of Virginia with the high school coaches.

In the current state of college sports, another area where you can upgrade your roster quickly is through the transfer portal. That is one place where Pry has had some success and that was never more evident this season after the season’s running back Bhayshul Tuten (North Carolina A&T) and defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland (Florida) had. They were not the only ones, but they were the two that saw the most success.

For as much as the transfer portal gives, it also takes it. Needing to replace a roster that was hit hard by the portal this winter, the Hokies coach went to work and continued his off-season success of bringing transfers from the Commonwealth home to play college football.

Brent Pry off-season masterclass continues

So far this portal window, Pry has commitments from three Virginia natives. The first one was safety Sherrod Covil from Clemson which fills a big need in the secondary. Tennessee transfer Cameron Seldon from Heathsville is expected to be a wide receiver in Blacksburg and Hampton native Jordan Bass who was a four-star player coming out of high school and will play linebacker for the Hokies.

The transfer portal results speak for themselves under Pry and now we need to see those results on the field. Pry has always been someone in his tenure in Blacksburg that wins the off-season and the results haven’t translated to the field. Now he needs to translate the results to the field from the off-season in a season that appears to have his seat hot entering it.
