The Virginia Tech football team will return to the field this Friday night in Texas when they travel to Dallas for a pivotal ACC clash with SMU. Both teams enter the game with two conference losses, and this is a de facto elimination game in the ACC Championship Game race.

After this game, the Hokies will have three regular-season games remaining in the 2026 season: at home against Stanford, at Miami, and at home against Virginia. The first game against the Cardinal will be on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Lane Stadium, and on Monday, the ACC released the game time and TV destination.

Virginia Tech gets time for Nov. 14 home game against Stanford

It will feel like forever when the Hokies return home to face the Cardinal in Blacksburg. The ACC announced on Monday that the game will be played at either 7 p.m. on ESPN2 or 7:30 p.m. on the ACC Network. The final determination will be made after this weekend's games. Regardless, it'll be another night game in Lane Stadium.

The last time Hokies fans saw their team at home inside the friendly confines of Lane Stadium, it was on Oct. 17 when Virginia Tech held off a furious second-half Georgia Tech rally for a 34-24 victory. Since that day, Virginia Tech has played at Clemson, had its bye week, and will visit SMU on Friday night.

There was some thought that this might end up being the game that the Hokies win to become bowl-eligible after losses at home to Pittsburgh and at California, but the upset of Clemson two weeks ago in Death Valley took care of that for James Franklin's crew, who sit at 6-2 overall. On the other hand, Stanford will be desperate coming into the game as they fight to become bowl-eligible.

The Cardinal are on their bye week this upcoming weekend, sitting at 4-5 overall after a 52-24 loss at Louisville on Saturday afternoon in Kentucky. Stanford's path to becoming bowl-eligible is a daunting one as after visiting the Hokies, they will visit Cal, then host SMU Thanksgiving Weekend.

This will be the second matchup between Virginia Tech and Stanford since the Cardinal joined the ACC with SMU and Cal a couple of years ago. The only meeting as conference opponents went in favor of Virginia Tech, 31-7, in October of 2024. It was a game that was played in Northern California in front of a close gathering of family and friends.

The home and road splits this season for Stanford are eye-opening. Their four wins have all come at home this season against Hawaii, Georgia Tech, Elon, and North Carolina State. Meanwhile, when they hit the road, it's a different team that has allowed 35 points to Duke, 57 points to Wake Forest, 58 points to Notre Dame, and 52 points to Louisville. If they are going to become bowl-eligible, they will have to win either at Virginia Tech or Cal. Giving up as many points away from home as the Cardinal do, they'll have to play a near-perfect game to get it done.
