As we enter the second full weekend of July, we are one week closer to the Virginia Tech football team opening its 2025 season against South Carolina in Atlanta—seven more Sundays.
As we look at what is a vital season for the Hokies and head coach Brent Pry, arguably the toughest game on Virginia Tech's schedule this fall is the opener against Shane Beamer and his Gamecocks, who are led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers. This is the second straight season Tech opens the season against an SEC school, losing to Vanderbilt last season on Labor Day Weekend. The Commodores will be the Hokies' Week 2 opponent in Blacksburg this season.
7 weeks until Virginia Tech's season-opener vs. South Carolina
Last week, we highlighted why the No. 8 was big for Virginia Tech this season, and this week, No. 7 is just as important for Pry & Co. Eight wins would be the ceiling this season for the Hokies, but a seven-win season is several wins that a lot of fans could see happening. For that to happen, like for them to reach eight, a lot would have to go right.
When the dust settled on the 2024 season in early January with a Duke's Mayo Bowl loss to Minnesota, Virginia Tech finished the season with a 6-7 record. Seven losses was something that not a lot of fans saw coming, if any, when the season began with all the preseason hype and honestly, you can't put a lot of stock in the bowl loss as Pry had a depleted roster for the game against a team that had a lot of their key players. Sound familiar from the season before, when the Hokies beat Tulane in the Military Bowl?
I've said it before, and it's worth repeating: South Carolina is giving me 2024 Virginia Tech vibes going into the season, with the preseason hype being real. Also, quarterback LaNorris Sellers is giving me Kyron Drones vibes at the same time last season with Heisman Trophy talk. As we learned last fall with Virginia Tech, games are won on the field, and that's what could make things interesting in Week 1 in Georgia.
