We are officially in the post-Brent Pry era at Virginia Tech after the Hokies' head football coach was fired on Sunday. First-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will assume the interim coaching duties the rest of the season while a search begins for the next head coach.
Sitting at 0-3, the Hokies will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Saturday at Lane Stadium, and who knows what to expect. With that said, here are three bold predictions for the Hokies and Terriers, which kicks at noon.
Virginia Tech scores 35-plus points
The 26 points scored against Old Dominion last weekend were the highest they scored in their first three games. They have scored at least 20 in two of their first three games, but were winless. Usually, after a coaching change, teams tend to play better and expect Virginia Tech to do the same.
Montgomery is still going to call the plays as the interim head coach and the playbook should open up and more chances taken. Expect more mixture in the play calls and better execution. Wofford comes at the right time for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech scores defensive/special teams touchdown
The defense has been a major issue the last six quarters for Virginia Tech against Vanderbilt and Old Dominion. Allowing 79 points through six quarters is, well, bad. I know, not breaking any news there.
A once proud unit that hung their hat on the lunch pail and DBU, the secondary was shredded by Diego Pavia and Colton Joseph over the last six quarters, and the defensive line had trouble stopping the running game. A more prideful effort should come against the Terriers, and it wouldn't be surprising to see a defensive score on a special team's touchdown. Tucker Holloway is due to break one.
Virginia Tech wins first game
After the way the first three games have gone, who says that Wofford, also 0-3, can't see what has happened and come to Blacksburg thinking they can't leave with a win? It would be icing on the cake ahead of ACC play.
Getting a win would take some pressure off of everyone remaining with the program following what has happened in recent days. It would also make things feel a little better with ACC play beginning at North Carolina State next weekend.
