Virginia Tech starting quarterback Grant Wells was injured during Week 2’s loss to Purdue with an ankle injury, which forced him to miss Saturday’s 35-16 loss at Rutgers. In his place, Kyron Drones started and despite the final score, the Baylor transfer did not play badly at all. In fact, you could make the case that it was the best Hokies offense looked all season moving the ball in a game.

Following the game, coach Brent Pry spoke about using this week ahead of their road game at Marshall next Saturday to get Wells healthy by saying, “We have to get him going.”

That quote is more than likely throwing some support at his senior signal caller, but if he is true to his word and plays Wells over Drone against the Thundering Hurd, then it should be a decision that should raise some eyebrows.

Pry going back to Wells would be a questionable decision

Did Drones make mistakes against the Scarlet Knights? Yes, but you can’t tell me that the offense did not look the best it had all season through the first three games moving the ball. Once Drones settled in, he looked confident, he was able to throw for 190 yards, including a nice touchdown pass in the third quarter for 39 yards to Da’Quan Felton.

Drones rushed for 84 yards and some of that had to do with Rutgers getting pressure on him and forcing him to scramble. Some of it was also the option to run with the ball or to hand it off. Regardless, when Drones is in the game, it keeps opposing defenses on their toes as he has shown the ability to throw the ball down the field or tuck it and run it. You don’t get that with Wells.

One thing is clear after the Rutgers loss, Drones is the option that Pry and the coaching staff need to gameplan around for the matchup with Marshall. If the second-year head coach decides to go with Wells, unless there is an injury to Drones, then it should raise some eyebrows and make you think that Pry is not putting the Hokies in the best position to win.
