Virginia Tech Football: Injury updates from practice Wednesday
By Scott Roche
Late Wednesday afternoon, the Virginia Tech football team held a practice and there was some good news when it comes to injuries, who practiced and who didn’t.
Heading into Saturday’s non-conference tilt at Rutgers, there are so many questions as to who will or who won’t play against the Scarlet Knights. The biggest question is who will start at quarterback after Grant Wells suffered an ankle injury at the end of the first half of their 24-17 loss to Purdue.
Virginia Tech had mixed results in practice on Wednesday
According to Andy Bitter, quarterback Grant Wells was dressed and limited in his participation, wide receiver Jaylin Lane looked full go, defensive end Keyshawn Burgos looked full go, and safety Nasir Peoples was not present. Bitter reported Wells threw a few passes in some drills, but backup Kyron Drones went first and freshman Pop Watson took all the 1-on-1 red zone throws during the last period the media saw.
So let’s discuss what all this means and how things may and should play out. Signs are pointing to Drones starting over Wells and in the big picture, that may be good. Why? Well, he brings a different dynamic to the offense as a running threat. Watson getting some work in the drills is interesting as he comes to the Hokies after a very good career at Springfield Central High School in Massachusetts and might be more dynamic than Drones with his athleticism.
The good news is Lane was at practice and dressed as Virginia Tech is already missing Ali Jennings for who knows how long. Burgos is key to the Hokies defense stopping the run against Rutgers, something they failed to do in their first two games against Old Dominion and Purdue. Peoples not practicing is concerning for the defensive backs.
It’s unlikely coach Brent Pry will name a starter for Saturday in New Jersey, but the option for him to go with is Drones. What does he have to lose?
