Aside from the third quarter last Thursday night at Lane Stadium, the Virginia Tech football team opened the second half of the 2024 season with a dominating 42-21 win over Boston College. The Hokies defense set the tone early and the offense scored on four of their five first-half possessions. The only drive they didn’t score on was the result of a Kyron Drones fumble deep in Eagles territory.

It was a record-breaking night for running back Bhayhsul Tuten and for the second consecutive season, Virginia Tech hung 40-plus points on BC, this time in Blacksburg. While the defense made enough plays in the fourth quarter to deny the Eagles any hopes of a comeback and what would have been a devastating loss at home. Two Tech offensive players were named Pro Football Focus to the Conference Player of the Week team.

The first Hokie named to PFF’s ACC Player of the Week team is offensive lineman Xavier Chaplin. It should not be surprising to see his name pop up on the list as he has been one of the better linemen for the Hokies this season at left tackle. He was a key part of the line that opened up the holes for Tuten.

Speaking of Tuten, he was named, as no surprise, as the conference’s ACC running back of the week. All he did was set the Virginia Tech all-time single-game record for rushing yards with 266 and scored three touchdowns on the ground and one through the air. He bolted for an 83-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and then added two in the third quarter, including a 6-yard run where he fought through some tackles and fought his way to the end zone.

In the second quarter, the Hokies put together a near-flawless drive to close the half and it ended with Tuten catching a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyron Drones after making a nice adjustment near the goal line. Many NFL scouts were in attendance in Blacksburg, and it’s safe to say that the North Carolina A&T transfer’s draft stock rose with his performance.
