Going into the 2025 season, it's a rather big one for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry. You could make the case that it's a season where better results are needed, or things could get interesting.
There are more questions than answers facing the Hokies with all the players lost to the transfer portal and the NFL Draft, as well as players using up all of their eligibility. The staff has brought in some players through the transfer portal, but there was also turnover with the coaching staff, with two new coordinators and an offensive line coach. The spotlight, however, will be on Pry, and where does he rank among the 136 FBS coaches going into the 2025 campaign?
Where does Brent Pry rank among the FBS football coaches going into 2025?
The Sporting News ranked all 136 FBS coaches going into 2025, and Pry was ranked 62nd, down five spots from this time last season. In all fairness, that seems like a decent ranking for a coach who is coming off a season that was disappointing after a 6-6 season with a ton of retention.
Some names around Pry include new Stanford coach Frank Reich (65th), Jake Dickert (63rd) of Wake Forest, Justin Wilcox (61st) of California, Clark Lea (60th) of Vanderbilt, who shot up 19 spots from last season, and Rich Rodriguez is 57th. First-year North Carolina coach Bill Belichick was 21st.
This is a big season for Pry and while another 6-6 season with a bowl game would likely be acceptable for his job, it certainly feels like a seven or eight win season would cement his position in Blacksburg. I wrote it before and I'll write it again, a team that does not have the hype going into it like Virginia Tech has with a ton of questions is one that will surprise and that could be the case with the Hokies in 2025.
