After a disappointing season, there were a ton of changes for the Virginia Tech football team this off-season. From transfer portal departures, to firing of assistant coaches, the Hokies saw a huge turnaround of roster players and coaches.
Now head coach Brent Pry is facing a huge season and this spring practice might be the biggest off-season in his tenure in Blacksburg. From new coaches working and evaluating their players, to transfer players coming in that need to make a huge impact and battling with some promising young returning players, this is going to be a huge next month for Virginia Tech.
New coordinators, Sam Siefkes on defense and Philip Montgomery on offense, along with new offensive line coach Matt Moore, there is a lot that needs to be accomplished before the Spring Game next month.
Having a young team returning could be considered exciting as expectations are not as high right now as they were a year ago when the Hokies brought back a ton of talent and added some through the transfer portal. Who knows, maybe a team with expectations that are tempered and a tough schedule could create different results this year? It’s college football and anything is possible at anytime.
When does Virginia Tech football begin spring practices?
According to ESPN, the Hokies will begin spring practices on March 19, which will be completed with the annual Spring Game on April 13 at Lane Stadium. This is a huge month of practices as some of the newer pieces added through the winter transfer portal can come in and contribute right away, while some of the returning players are going to push for more playing in 2025.
Both quarterbacks, Kyron Drones and Pop Watson, return, along with Davi Belfort, who is also returning. Last season, Drones and Watson started the Spring Game, and following the game, when the spring portal window opened, Dylan Wittke entered the portal and transferred to Minnesota. Will another QB enter after these spring practices? Time will tell.
