What Would You Consider Brent Pry’s Signature Win?
By Roy Hatfield
Brent Pry inherited a Virginia Tech program that was a shell of its former self. Under Justin Fuente, the Hokies started out red-hot and cooled over his last two seasons. They say you never want to be the man that takes over for “the man”, and Fuente never fit in as the Hokies’ HBC. Ross Dellinger hit home: It has been well documented all the outside forces actively working against Fuente and his staff.
To be fair this isn’t the same climate Fuente inherited. I genuinely believe Brent Pry was met with honest and open arms. Whit Babcock, fresh off of lessons learned, made an incredible hire for Virginia Tech. The only problem three years in is: Where are the wins? The 2022 Hokies finished with a 3-8 mark. Best win? Boston College 27-10 in week two. The other two wins came against Liberty and Wofford.
Well, 2023 looked quite differently in the wins column. The Hokies went bowling and finished 7-6. Best win? Again, the Boston College Eagles fall to the Hokies, this time at home, in another blowout. The rest of the wins on the schedule are Old Dominion, a bad Pittsburgh team, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College, and Virginia. The Hokies did win the Military Bowl game against a severely depleted Tulane.
However, with a ton of retainment and a bunch of transfer portal additions, 2024 was expected to be the year for Pry and the Hokies. Not so much. You are not going to believe 2024. Yes, Boston College is one of the five total wins, but I would say Georgia Tech is the most impressive win of the Brent Pry era. We are two games shy of a completed four-year run under Brent Pry. His “signature” win thus far is a sloppy win at home against a backup quarterback. This is fine.
