Most eyes of Virginia Tech fans on Friday night were in Dallas as the Hokies football team played SMU in a pivotal ACC showdown in early November. After a while, it appeared where the result was heading as the Mustangs scored on their first eight possessions en route to a 51-28 blowout win.

Meanwhile, in Pennsylavania, Virginia Tech's fifth-ranked wrestling team kicked off their 2026-27 season at No. 12 Lehigh on Friday night in what is expected to be a very big winter in Blacksburg. Hokeis fans were waiting to see what freshman Bo Bassett was going to do in his first collegiate match after winning a World Championship a couple of weeks ago.

Bassett and the Hokies didn't disappoint in statement 30-6 win over Lehigh.

Virginia Tech star freshman Bo Bassett powers Hokies wrestling over Lehigh in season opener

Hokies coach Tony Robie has built Virginia Tech into a powerhouse on the mat. This season should be no different. There is talent splattered all over the roster, and Bassett, despite being just a freshman, highlights it.

He matched up against Lehigh's Luke Stanich. Bassett raced out to an 11-3 lead in the match, and when the dust settled, Bassett won his first college match, 13-9, in the 141-pound weight class. Bassett looked like a season vet in the match and is the latest in a long list of stars Robie has brought to the mat in Blacksburg.

Bassett wasn't the only one who put on a show against the Mountain Hawks. At 125, Eddie Ventrecas won by decision, 4-2, over Mason Ziegler. Aaron Seidel won a major decision, 14-2, over Keanu Dillard. Drew Gorman at 149 won by tech fall over Kelvin Griffin, and at 165, Mac Church won by major decision, 10-0, over Richie Grungo. Ryan Burton won by major decision as well at 174 for the Hokies over Brady Collins, while at 184, Jaden Bullock won by decision, 4-3, over Rylan Rogers. Sonny Sasso won by tech fall at 197 over Lehigh's Cael Weidmoyer.

It was an impressive win for the Hokies on the road against a Top 12 team. However, Bassett is already turning heads after his first college match, and this is setting up to be a very fun winter for Virginia Tech fans when it comes to watching the Hokies on the mat. Virginia Tech will host The Citadel on Nov. 19 on the ACC Network Extra before they head to the PRTC Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Nov. 22.
