The Virginia Tech wrestling season begins next week with the Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia, on Sunday, before their first match on Nov. 6 at Lehigh at 7 p.m. However, for one of the Hokies' wrestlers, the intense competition has already begun at the World Championships in Kazakhstan.

Virginia Tech freshman Bo Bassett, who hails from Johnstown, Pa., and Bishop McCort High School, wrestled on Friday morning for the 65-kilogram finale against Armenian world champion Zazgen Tevanyan. When the dust settled, Bassett put the rest of the wrestling world on notice with a win over Tevanyan.

Bassett beat Tevanyan 9-1 on Friday for the 65-kilogram title at the United World Wrestling Senior Freestyle Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Bassett captured the 60th title in the history of U.S. men’s freestyle wrestling, and he became the second-youngest to do it at just 20 years old. He did it before a match this season for Hokies, which is an impressive feat.

Just how big a feat is this? Bassett is the first 65GK American World Champ in 20 years, and he is the first Senior World Champ in Virginia Tech program history. Bassett was a huge commitment to coach Tony Robie after he went 170-0 in high school.

Before he wrestles for the Hokies this season, Bassett's rΓ©sumΓ©. He was the U20 World Champion in 2025-26 and the U20 UP Open Champion last year as well. However, his march toward a championship on Friday had some difficult matches along the way. He had a pair of two bonus point wins before taking down Abasgadzi Magomedov of Russia.

Bassett fell behind 12-3 and, coming close to a tech-fall loss, he rebounded and rallied for a 14-13 win with a takedown and a turn to go up. In the semifinals, he registered a 12-2 tech fall win against Abdulmazhid Kudiev of Tajikistan.

With a World Championship secured, Bassett will now return to Virginia Tech, and he has proven that he's more than ready for the upcoming season this winter with his championship. Things get underway for Robie and the Hokies next week against Lehigh.
