Just like Mike Young and the men's program, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team underwent some changes in the month of April with the Transfer Portal. Unlike last year, there were some major subtractions from Blacksburg for head coach Megan Duffy and her staff.
The two biggest losses for the Hokies were point guard Mackenzie Nelson and forward Carys Baker. Both figured to be key pieces of the 2026-27 squad that would be looking to build off their first NCAA Tournament appearance under Duffy in March. To compound matters, both players are going to be in the ACC next season, with Nelson landing at Clemson and Baker at Louisville.
There was good news with Carliegh Wenzel returning. So far, Duffy has added a pair of Tennessee transfers in Alyssa Latham and Lauren Hurst.
Virginia Tech gets good early-bracketology news
After making the NCAA Tournament as a nine-seed and a first-round loss at the hands of Oregon, the Hokies got and early promising update for the 2026-27 in terms of a way-too-early bracketology from Charlie Creme of ESPN.
Creme has the Hokies falling on the nine-line again, this time facing Baylor in Columbia, SC, with the top-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks. Let's hope this year Virginia Tech, if they do get in, can avoid the brutal eight/nine-line again.

- There were big changes on the sideline in the ACC, where Virginia fired head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton. The school hired Richmond coach Aaron Roussel, who added former Hokies assistant under Duffy, Darren Guensch, to his staff in Charlottesville.
- Speaking of the Virginia opening, former Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks was linked to the position. Could you imagine the drama if that had happened twice a year next season and beyond?
- Recruiting is going to begin to heat up, and look for Duffy and the Hokies to be in on some of the top recruits.
