The Virginia Tech women's basketball team has been waiting 10 days since being eliminated in the second round of the ACC Tournament by Georgia Tech to learn their NCAA Tournament fate.
Sunday night, the NCAA Tournament bracket was released and the Hokies will not be part of the 68-team field. Sitting at 18-12, Virginia Tech has been the first team out over the last couple of weeks according to Charlie Creme at ESPN, and in the end, he was right when he said it's not a great bubble season. That allowed the committee to give two at-large bids to the Ivy League, which keeps Virginia Tech out of the field.
Virginia Tech misses 2025 NCAA Tournament
Virginia Tech was safely in the field for a good part of the season, but a rough February that saw losses to Syracuse, Stanford and Boston College sink their hopes. They had a NET ranking of 46 and Princeton was No. 47, which was a flip in the eyes of the committee. In the end, they chose the Tigers to play Iowa State this week.
This hurts, but the job that Megan Duffy has done in her first season in Blacksburg should not go unnoticed. She took over for Kenny Brooks and between some retainment, the transfer portal and freshman, she took them to 18 wins and an even 9-9 in the ACC.
It wasn't enough and it stinks for seniors Rose Micheaux and Matilda Ekh. It's especially hurtful for Micheaux, who played behind Elizabeth Kitley last season, and got her chance to start and was great when she was healthy.
She missed the loss to Syracuse at home and the committee likely took that into consideration, but again, this year wasn't a great bubble and they still were left out for three Ivy League schools.
