After taking over the Virginia Tech women’s basketball program from Kenny Brooks last April, former Marquette coach Megan Duffy hit the ground running in terms of retainment of the roster left over and on the recruiting trail.

Duffy got key retention from some players and now the Hokies will sit and wait until Sunday night to find out their NCAA Tournament fate. As far as recruiting goes, Duffy got a late-May commitment from Kate Sears from North Carolina, a four-star recruit. The talented guard just capped her career at Watauga High School with some eye-popping numbers for both this season and her career. For her senior year, she was picked up a prestigious award before heading off to Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech WBB commit named Ms. Basketball for the state of North Carolina

Sears is a 5-foot-10 point guard who can do it all, was named Ms. Basketball in North Carolina. She can score in multiple ways, dish out assists and rebound, which is a combination that is not always seen in Division 1 guards. As stated in Wednesday’s edition of Virginia Tech News, her numbers were off the charts, but what sticks out are the triple-doubles she had and averaging almost 30 points a night. She was named for the fourth year in a row the District 11 Player of the Year.

She should step right in next year and play a lot of minutes. The Hokies have a fair share of returning guards, but in this day and age of the transfer portal, anything is possible. However, Duffy has seemed to have won the team and fanbase over and hopefully that helps with retainment.

Let’s not overlook the fact that Duffy’s first commitment comes from the state of North Carolina and she was able to secure a commitment over UNC, North Carolina State, and Duke. That’s huge that she was able to go into the state and snag a top recruit from right under those programs and get a Top 70 recruit.
