The women's basketball transfer portal is closed, unless a coaching change happens, and so far, Virginia Tech coach Megan Duffy has one commitment in Purdue guard Sophie Swanson earlier this month. Despite that one commitment, there is still more work for Duffy and her staff to do in getting portal commitments to build around he returning players.
Matilda Ekh and Rose Micheaux are moving through graduation, and Lani White hit the portal and committed recently to return to Utah after one season in Blacksburg. With the return of Carys Baker and Carleigh Wenzel, along with Kayl Petersen, who had a good first college season that saw her game grow as the season went along. On Thursday night, the Hokies picked up their second portal commitment, and it is a familiar player whom Tech saw in their final game.
Virginia Tech women's basketball gets commitment from Texas Tech forward/guard Kilah Freelon
Duffy added to her 2025-26 roster on Thursday night when Kilah Freelon, who is listed as a guard but also doubles in the frontcourt, committed to the Hokies from Texas Tech. Yes, that's right, the same Texas Tech team that bounced Virginia Tech in the second round of the WBIT last month in the second round. In that game, Freelon had seven points, six rebounds, and two steals. In a loss to Florida in the next round, she scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 67-63 loss.

Freelon saw a dip in her stats from 2023-24 that saw her average 7.9 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. The Colorado native is active on the boards and can finish around the basket, which is what the Hokies need next season.
