Thursday marked one year since Megan Duffy has been in Blacksburg replacing Kenny Brooks. It was a good Year 1 for Duffy, who went 19-13 with a small roster and was the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament’s 68-team field, which is closer than a lot of people expected. They went to the WBIT and fell in the second round as the top seed against Texas Tech.

Since losing that game, three of Duffy’s players have entered the portal with Lani White being the biggest loss. Duffy has a handful of scholarships to use this season, and on Thursday, she celebrated her first full year in Blacksburg by getting a transfer portal commit.

Virginia Tech lands transfer portal commit from Purdue guard Sophie Swanson

Duffy collected her first transfer portal commit of this cycle when Purdue sophomore Sophie Swanson committed. This season for the Boilermakers, she averaged 8.9 points a game in 28 games and almost 20 minutes a night. The Illinois native saw a slight bump in her stats from last season.

Swanson provides Duffy and the Hokies with depth in the backcourt behind Carleigh Wenzel, Mackenzie Nelson, Samyha Suffren, and some talented incoming freshmen, including Katie Sears.

An addition like Swanson not only adds depth, but she also allows Duffy to test different lineups she can use in certain situations depending on how games are going. In 2022, Swanson was named Illinois Miss Basketball as a junior, but she suffered a knee injury her senior year in high school, which cut into her first-year playing time at Purdue.

This is the first of what Virginia Tech hopes will be some key additions for the 2025-26 season. It’s safe to say that the Hokies got better on Thursday with a player who should fit right into their system.
