For the second straight season, the Commonwealth Cup comes down to becoming bowl-eligible for the Virginia Tech football team. This season, there is a little twist as Virginia also enters the game 5-6 on Saturday night at Lane Stadium. It’s a winner-take-all as the winner gets a bowl game, and the loser has their season end and they begin a very long off-season.
It’s somewhat stunning that Virginia Tech is in this spot considering all the hype going into the season, but here we are. A win would be big as it gets the Hokies extra practice and a bowl game next month to salvage some of the 2024 season. If they are going to get it, it’ll likely have to be done without some key pieces who are injured.

The Hokies opened as a 7.5 favorite according to FanDuel, which is somewhat surprising. How often have we seen them open as a favorite, enter the game as a favorite, and lose? The line is what is unexpected. At the time this article is being written, Virginia Tech is still a 7.5 favorite.
Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: History
This will be the first game in Blacksburg between the two teams since 2018 and currently, Virginia Tech holds a 61-33-5 advantage in the series. This is a big game in terms of the future between the in-state rivals as recruiting will be affected by the result and the transfer portal with players entering and looking to come to either school. In-state recruiting might be one of the bigger effects of the outcome.
