The non-conference schedules for the Virginia Tech men's and women's basketball teams are quickly coming to a close. Before you know it, they will both be in the middle of their daunting ACC schedules.

Megan Duffy and the women opened ACC play last Sunday afternoon at home and lost a frustrating game to Duke. Mike Young and the men will kick off their conference schedule on New Year's Eve afternoon when Virginia visits Cassell Coliseum.

Speaking of Cassell Coliseum, it will be a busy place on Sunday afternoon as the Hokies' men and women will host non-conference games beginning at noon when the Young's team hosts Maryland Eastern Shore. At 4 o'clock, Duffy and the women will host East Tennessee State.

Coming off a 96-74 win over Western Carolina on Thursday night at home, Young's team is 9-2. Freshman Neoklis Avdalas scored 30 points, 24 in the second half, and West Virginia transfer Amani Hansberry once again shone in the absence of Tobi Lawal, scoring 18 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out six assists. Tyler Johnson and Ben Hammond each had 13 points, and Jaden Schutt also finished in double digits with 10 points.

As far as the women go, they are 8-3 after blowing out Presbyterian, 92-36, on Wednesday night at home. Samyha Suffren had 17 points to lead the Hokies, while Kilah Freelon, a Texas Tech transfer, had 13 points, as did Lelia Wells. Aniya Trent had nine points as she continues to play well off the bench for Duffy.

Duffy and the women will return to ACC play next Thursday night at Florida State before hosting Radford on Dec. 21, before the Christmas break. Young and the men will close out their non-conference schedule on Dec. 20 at home against Elon at 2 p.m. before they enter the Christmas break.
