It has been quiet on the transfer portal front for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. So far, the Hokies have a commitment from Amani Hansberry from West Virginia, and Tech has lost six players to the portal themselves.

Head coach Mike Young has a number of areas of need to address. He did get some good news with point guard Ban Hammond and guards Jaden Schutt and Tyler Johnson both coming back. All three were starters for most of the season and adding Hansberry into the mix with his athleticism is a nice addition.

There have been a handful of players who have been linked to the Hokies over the last couple of weeks. Two guards who Virginia Tech has shown interest in are three players that the Hokies should make a priority to fill needs for next season.

The Hokies have shown interest in a trio of portal guards, Jlynn Counter, Jeremiah Williams, and Brendan Hausen. Young is clearly looking for depth behind Hammond and Schutt, with Brandon Rechsteiner having entered the portal.

Counter averaged 10.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists a game for Middle Tennessee State this season. The 6-foot-3 Oklahoma native saw a dip in his stats this season after averaging 14 points a game in his first two years with the Blue Raiders. Out of the trio of players the Hokies are in on, Counter is someone who they will likely pursue the hardest.

Williams, who has heard from nearly a dozen schools, is an interesting player and the 6-foot-4 Illinois native is a versatile guard who only averaged 12.2 points a game this year for Rutgers in 31 games, and he scored a season-high 13 points three times in 2024-25 against Washington, Iowa, and Illinois. He would be an under-the-radar pickup for Virginia Tech as a graduate transfer.

Hausen averaged 10.9 points a game this season at Kansas State after transferring from Villanova, where he only averaged six points a game in two seasons for the Wildcats. The 6-foot-4 Texas native has heard from 20 schools, including Virginia and SMU out of the ACC.
