After sweeping their first five games last weekend in South Carolina, the 14th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team split its four games in Charlotte in the Queen City Classic. After splitting games with Villanova and Michigan State, the Hokies again split two games on Saturday, beating Villanova again before losing to Charlotte.
Virginia Tech will head back to Blacksburg at 7-2. Their final scheduled game against Michigan State, which was scheduled for Sunday morning, has been canceled because of anticipated weather in the area. You could say it was a bit of a disappointing weekend for Pete D'Amour's team after opening the season with five wins in South Carolina.
Virginia Tech softball splits weekend in Charlotte
Villanova is a winless team, and Virginia Tech took care of business, beating the Wildcats for a second straight day. The Hokies fell behind again, 2-0, through an inning and a half, but they responded with five runs over the second and third innings for a 5-3 lead. They put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 11-3 win.
Zoe Yaeger and Gaby Mizelle each had home runs for Virginia Tech while Emma Mazzarone and Nora Abromavage each drove in two runs. Bree Carrico picked up the win in the circle, scattering four hits and striking out six in five innings.
In their second game, the Hokies fell to Charlotte, 4-2. They trailed 3-0 entering the top of the sixth and scored two runs to cut the deficit to one, but the 49ers added a run in the bottom of the sixth for the two-run win. The only two runs driven in were on a two-run Abromavage double in the sixth.
Virginia Tech will head to Georgia next weekend for five more games. They will play two games against Georgia and Seton Hall and one against Utah State.
