As news had been trickling out over the last couple of days in terms of players making their decisions about their futures in Blacksburg with Megan Duffy and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team, one person who we had not heard from yet was Carys Baker.

If there was anyone Duffy could not lose, it was Carleigh Wenzel and Baker. Wenzel recently announced that she was returning to Virginia Tech for her senior season, but on Saturday, Baker announced the decision that all Hokies' fans had feared: she was entering the Transfer Portal.

Virginia Tech forward Carys Baker is reportedly entering the transfer portal

In an announcement that was a likely outcome, the longer it took, Baker announced on her Instagram account that she was entering the Transfer Portal for her senior season. That is a blow to the 2026-27 roster for Duffy and her staff.

Baker, daughter of former NBA player Vin, averaged 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds a game this past season in helping Virginia Tech reach the NCAA Tournament after being the first team left out of the field last season. She had 21 points and 14 rebounds in the first-round loss to Oregon, but most of that came in the second half after she struggled in the opening 20 minutes.

There are going to be some big changes coming in 2026-27 for Duffy. Baker joins Kayl Petersen, Mackenzie Nelson, and Sophie Swanson, entering the portal next week when it opens. Earlier this week, Duffy picked up a commitment from Tennessee transfer Alyssa Latham, which should have been a red flag that Baker leaving was a possibility, as they play the same position.

Like Nelson, Baker is someone who will be sought after in the portal as she can play both inside and outside and be an effective scorer.
