Virginia Tech reported AD target would be perfect Whit Babcock replacement

Virginia Tech needs to make a move for one standing AD in South Carolina.

Times are changing in Blacksburg. First, James Franklin was hired as the school's new football coach, replacing his former Penn State defensive coordinator, Brent Pry. Actually, despite getting fired as the head coach in Blacksburg after four underperforming years, Pry is coming back as Franklin's DC with the Hokies.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Virginia Tech president Tim Sands was retiring. Then, a few weeks later, it was announced that athletic director Whit Babcock is retiring as well. That's some major shakeup in the administration after Franklin was hired.

Read into that as you will, but change is coming, and that can be a good thing. Is it a coincidence that Franklin is hired and Sands and Babcock are retiring? Who knows, but these next couple of hires are hires that the school needs to get right, just like the football hiring of Franklin was one the school needed to nail.

One name that has been linked to Virginia Tech is Coastal Carolina's Chance Miller. He certainly is someone who would be a nice addition in Blacksburg.

Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller linked to Virginia Tech opening

Ben Portnoy of Business Sports Journal reported on X that Miller is a name to watch for the Virginia Tech opening as athletic director. He has five years of previous experience at the Power 4 level, serving as the senior deputy athletics director at the University of South Carolina from April of 2013 to July of 2019 before landing at Coastal Carolina.

Miller has an extensive background in fundraising and working with NIL, something that Virginia Tech desperately needs.

The Babcock tenure at Virginia Tech has been underwhelming on multiple levels. His two head football hires completely failed, and he wasn't part of the search for Pry's replacement. Pretty telling and the right decision. An AD should never have a third chance to hire a head football coach.

Given the current structure of NIL and college athletics, this is a hire that Virginia Tech needs to nail. They are already behind in terms of NIL in the ACC, but they are heading in the right direction, but not there yet. The school nailed the Franklin hiring for football, now they need to nail the AD hiring, and Miller certainly would be a good choice.
