What a difference two weeks make. Fourteen days after firing Brent Pry, the Virginia Tech football team was left for dead in the 2025 season at 0-3. Interim coach Philip Montgomery was left to lead the Hokies for the rest of the season.
Virginia Tech did what they were supposed to do last week by rolling over Wofford, 38-6. They knew after the game that getting the first win was big, but it was big because the final eight games were going to be ACC games. Their first one was Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C., against North Carolina State.
The Wolfpack entered the game as nearly a double-digit favorite, depending on which betting site you look at, but regardless, you get the picture. NC State rebounding from a loss at Duke last week was expected. Well, like Big Brother, expect the unexpected in college football in 2025.
The Hokies went into Carter-Finley Stadium and went toe-to-toe with the Wolfpack and came away with a gritty 23-21 upset. Two weeks ago, that seemed like nothing more than a dream. Now heading home to prepare for Wake Forest next Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium, bettors are taking notice of Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech opens as a sizable favorite over Wake Forest
According to DraftKings, Virginia Tech opens as a 5.5 favorite over Wake Forest. There were questions as to whether the Hokies might not win another game after beating Wofford this year; now they are sizable favorites against the Demon Deacons, something that didn't seem possible just a few days ago. That's a rather big line for the 2025 Hokies as a favorite.
Wake Forest was screwed by the officials against Georgia Tech at home on Saturday and should have knocked off the Yellow Jackets with an offside penalty late in the game, but it wasn't called. Instead, Wake Forest punted, Georgia Tech tied the game, and won it in overtime. Now they come to Blacksburg upset and rightfully so.
