The result on Sunday may not say it, but it was a good weekend for the Virginia Tech baseball team in Greenville, North Carolina in the Keith LeClair Classic on the campus of East Carolina.
Behind a strong pitching performance from their bullpen, the host Pirates beat the Hokies, 6-1, to end the weekend as co-champions of the annual early-season classic. Both teams went 2-1 on the weekend as Virginia Tech beat Indiana State, 10-2, on Friday before beating Kent State, 7-2, on Saturday.
It was the first three games played outside of Blacksburg this season for Virginia Tech, which returns home with an 8-3 record. They are scheduled to host Norfolk State for two games, Tuesday and Wednesday, before beginning ACC play next weekend hosting Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech softball wins 4 out of 5 at Hokie Invite
The 17th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team won four out of the five games they played this weekend at the Hokie Invite in Salem. They won their first game over Villanova on Friday, 18-2, then dropped the second game to the Wildcats, 7-6. Saturday the Hokies beat Penn State, 6-3, before beating James Madison, 4-1, on Sunday, then Radford, 5-4.
After a crazy early-season schedule that saw Virginia Tech (17-4) travel a lot, they will be off this week until they kick off ACC play at home when they host Virginia for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
Women's lacrosse falls to Boston College
The Hokies women's lacrosse team had their four-game winning streak snapped over the weekend at home against top-ranked Boston College, 21-5. The Eagles led 16-3 at halftime after scoring nine unanswered second quarter goals. Lauren Render tallied two goals for the Hokies (5-2) who will look to rebound on Wednesday afternoon at home against Mount St. Mary's.
Boston College latest to cancel spring game
Another ACC football team has canceled their Spring Game. Boston College joins North Carolina State in not holding the annual game. The list of schools going down this road is growing and growing by the week, which is tough to see.
Again, hopefully this is not a sign of things to come for the sport of college football. I get that Ohio State cancels theirs after playing deep into January and winning the National Championship, but other schools like BC who ended their season in December are concerning.
