It was a busy weekend across the athletic department at Virginia Tech and the softball team had a successful weekend at Alabama in the Bama Bash. The Hokies won four of their five games including splitting a pair of games with the No. 21 Crimson Tide.
After No. 17 Virginia Tech held on to win on Friday night, Alabama rebounded on Sunday with a convincing 9-1 win to give Tech their only loss of the weekend. After beating Drake also on Friday, Virginia Tech swept a doubleheader against Southern Utah on Saturday, which included a rally from down 3-0 for a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
Virginia Tech (12-3) will head to Liberty on Wednesday for a non-conference game before the Hokies Invitational next weekend in Salem. It's hard to believe, but we're just two weeks from ACC play beginning the second weekend in March against Virginia.
Women's lacrosse rallies to beat Pittsburgh
After winning three of their first four non-conference games, the Hokies women's lacrosse team rallied to open ACC play with an, 11-10, win over Pittsburgh. Lauren Render had three goals, while Mia Pozzi (two assists), Grace New, and Molly Re each tallied two goals. Tech will visit Queens on Wednesday before hosting ACC powerhouse Boston College next weekend.
Miami reportedly closing in on new men's basketball coach
On Saturday night, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team bounced back from a brutal performance last week at Boston College with an 81-68 victory over Miami. Before the game tipped off in South Florida, it was reported that the Hurricanes were closing in on hiring Duke assistant coach Jai Lewis as their next head coach.
Lewis would replace Jim Larrañaga who stepped down right after Christmas, leaving Miami to finish the season with Bill Courtney as the interim coach. The Hurricanes are 6-21 overall and 2-14 in the ACC. They will miss the ACC Tournament next month, one of three teams.
Virginia Tech football to get a visit from in-state three-star recruit
Recruiting in the Class of 2026 is a top priority for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and his staff. One of the top in-state recruits, Zaevion Cleveland, was offered by the Hokies and will be making a visit at the end of next month to Blacksburg.
The 6-foot-4, 187-pound three-star athlete from Virginia Beach will visit on March 29, when the dead period is lifted. You would have to think that he is a priority in the class for Virginia Tech.
