After stumbling through non-conference play at 5-6, it was up in the air as to how many games the Virginia Tech men's basketball team was going to win in ACC play. I mean, sure, it's harder to go winless through conference play than it is to go undefeated, but would it surprise anyone if it happened to this Hokies team?

Virginia Tech picked up a come-from-behind win over Miami at home last month, and then on Saturday night, they had a chance to go for the season sweep of the Hurricanes. Did you even think a season-sweep of someone by possible by this team? Anyway, thanks to an offensive onslaught from the bench, the Hokies were able to do with a 43-point second half. Here are two truths and a lie after the Hokies improved to 7-9 in ACC play and 12-15 overall.

Truth: Jaydon Young was a man on a mission

During this season, Jaydon Young has had his moments, but Saturday night was a breakout night for the sophomore. Coming off the bench, Young had a career-high 27 points and was a man on a mission in the second half, carrying his team to the win.

Ben Burnham started a 13-0 Virginia Tech run in the second half to give them control of the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, then Young buried his own 3-pointer and had a strong finish going to the basket. He had a couple more baskets taking it strong to the hoop before he hit another 3-pointer. He proved he can be a difference-maker when he plays like he did against Miami.

Truth: Virginia Tech's bench was the difference

There have been times this year when the Hokies bench has been non-existent. That was not the case against Miami and it was one of their better games this season. Tobi Lawal got Tech going offensively, scoring the first seven points, but he had just two more points the rest of the game. Normally that turns into a Virginia Tech loss, but not when your bench puts up 53 points to the Hurricanes 19.

Young led the way with his 27, but Burnham had 14 points, which included some key 3-pointers and Patrick Wessler had 10 points. He came up big in the second half when Mylyjael Poteat was lost to an injury late in the first half. Not only did the bench supply offense, but they were very good on the defensive end in the final 20 minutes as well. Much-needed.

Lie: Lynn Kidd was not able to get revenge on his former team

You could tell that former Virginia Tech center Lynn Kidd was ready for this game despite being without his teammate and leading scorer Matthew Cleveland. In the first matchup in Blacksburg in January, he had seven points, but he doubled that output in South Florida.

Kidd finished with 16 points and was a bigger factor than he was last month, but the end result was the same, a Virginia Tech win. Kidd got paid by Miami which is good for him, but the results on the scoreboard also matter and Virginia Tech got the best of him both times.
