On Saturday night, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team will play their regular season final at Clemson before the ACC Tournament in Charlotte next week. Once that ends, the Hokies and head coach Mike Young will be facing a big off-season with what was reported as a better NIL package for next year.
All eyes will turn to who will enter the transfer portal and who will be sticking around in Blacksburg. Shortly after the end of the season, a four-star point guard in the Class of 2025 will be announcing his decision after listing his final five with Virginia Tech in the mix.
Chance Mallory, from Charlottesville, de-committed from Virginia when Tony Bennett stepped down abruptly in the fall and he narrowed his list down to five schools, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. He is scheduled to make his choice on March 22.
Baseball drops heartbreaker to Georgia Tech
It was not the opening to ACC play the Hokies baseball team was hoping for. Leading Georgia Tech, 3-2, entering the top of the ninth, a pair of walks to lead off the inning turned into the game tying and winning runs for the Yellow Jackets.
The Hokies got an RBI double from Garrett Michel, an RBI single from Henry Cooke and a Jared Davis solo home run, but it wasn't enough to keep the Hokies from falling to 10-4 on the season. Game 2 of the series will be Saturday afternoon at English Field.
Softball rallies to win opener vs. Virginia
The 17th-ranked Hokies softball team opened ACC play with an 8-4 win over No. 23 Virginia Friday night and they too needed to rally to snap the Cavaliers' 12-game winning streak.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Virginia Tech scored four runs on RBI singles from Michelle Chatfield, Bre Peck and Kylie Aldridge, while Jordan Lynch had an RBI ground out. After Virginia tied the game in the fourth, Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the frame and one in the fifth for victory to improve to 18-4. Game 2 will be Saturday.
