It has been two weeks since the University of Michigan fired Sherrone Moore with cause. Since that night, there have been several names linked to the job, with Louisville's Jeff Brohm reportedly being linked to the position. That was before the Cardinals went out and edged Toledo, 27-22, in the Bush's Boca Raton Bowl in Florida.

On Wednesday morning, Pete Thamel joined ESPN's "Get Up'' and said that three names are emerging to be the next head coach in Ann Arbor. Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz, former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, and Washington's Jedd Fisch.

"There's three candidates right now that I think are in their crosshairs: and that's Eli Drinkwitz, the Missouri coach; Jedd Fisch, the Washington coach; and obviously soon-to-be former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham," Thamel said. "Those are considered gettable coaches for Michigan, but they all come with complications obviously."

For now, it seems like Brohm will remain in the ACC with Louisville.

Virginia Tech football players playing in games in January

The Hokies finished with a 3-9 record and three wins shy of bowl eligibility this year, but some former Hokies will get a chance to play in All-Star Games. Quarterback Kyron Drones will play in the 2026 Hula Bowl All-Star Game on Jan. 11 at noon.

Offensive lineman Tomas Rimac followed his offensive line coach at West Virginia, Matt Moore, to Virginia Tech in the portal last winter and was a big part of the Hokies' line in 2025. He will be playing in the 2026 American Bowl on Jan. 22.

Women's basketball has work to do for the NCAA Tournament

The Virginia Tech women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday with a rout of Radford at home. All that's left in the 2025-26 season is ACC games for Megan Duffy's team, and it appears they have a lot of work to do to find their way into the 2026 NCAA Tournament field.

After being the first team left out last season, the Hokies are among the 'First Four Out' according to Charlie Creme of ESPN. Joining them in the group are Columbia, Duke, and Clemson. The Hokies suffered a loss at home to Duke earlier this month. Virginia Tech will resume ACC play on New Year's Day, hosting Miami at Cassell Coliseum.
