Virginia Tech Men's Basketball News: Jaden Schutt Impressing, Mike Young Names Point Guard & More
By Scott Roche
It's hard to believe, but we are just five days away from the Virginia Tech men's basketball team beginning their season at home on Nov. 4 at home against Delaware State. As we inch closer to the 2024-25 season, let's dive into the latest Virginia Tech men's basketball news.
Mylyjael Poteat drops weight
Last season, the Hokies were hit hard by the transfer portal after a mass exodus happened following a second-round loss at Ohio State. One player who entered the portal, Mylyjael Poteat, withdrew three days after entering to return to Virginia Tech for his final season. Jon Rothstein, who caught up with head coach Mike Young, reported that the big man has lost 25 pounds.
Without a doubt, Poteat is going to be a big part of the Hokies this season and will be looking to replace Lynn Kidd's production, who ended up at Miami in the transfer portal. Poteat did show flashes last season in some games of being a contributor for Virginia Tech.
Brandon Rechsteiner to start as point guard
Last week, Virginia Tech dismissed Temple transfer Hysier Miller from the program and it leaves a huge hole at point guard for the Hokies. According to Rothstein, sophomore Brandon Rechsteiner will begin the season running the point. This is a big weight being put on his shoulders.
Jaden Schutt impressing in camp
One of the more interesting transfers that came into Virginia Tech last season is Jaden Schutt from Duke. A former four-star recruit, he missed a lot of time with the Blue Devils with injuries but appears to be healthy and ready to contribute. According to Young, he has separated himself since he's been on campus and he has a chance to fill a void of outside shooting.
Mike Young being inducted into Wofford Hall of Fame
In February, Young will be inducted into Wofford's Hall of Fame. He coached the Terriers from the 2002-03 season until 2018-19 until he was hired at Virginia Tech. He went 299-244 at Wofford in the Southern Conference and led them to the NCAA Tournament four times.
