With their NCAA Tournament hopes all but dashed, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team will look to rebound from their latest gut-punch loss of the season on Tuesday night at Miami, when they fell, 67-66, to the Hurricanes, on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
At 17-10 overall and 6-8 in the ACC, the Hokies are likely headed to the NIT to continue their season after the ACC Tournament. Looking to get back on track, Virginia Tech will celebrate senior day on Saturday when they look to get some revenge for a loss earlier this year against Wake Forest when the Demon Deacons visit Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech hosts Wake Forest on Senior Day
Virginia Tech just needs a win in the worst way. They have lost two straight games after pulling off the upset of Clemson on the road 10 days ago. The last time they were home, Florida State blew them out, 92-69, in a game where the Seminoles ran Tech out of Cassell in the second half to the tune of 53-27 on the scoreboard. Then, at Miami, the game was there for the taking against the Hurricanes, but they came up one stop defensively and one basket offensively from picking up a pivotal win.
Now they will celebrate senior Tobi Lawal against a Wake Forest team that is not very good, but beat the Hokies last month in Winston-Salem on a shot in the final seconds. It was one of four losses now for Mike Young's team, either on the final possession or inside the final five seconds. You can't make it up this year, the games they have lost, and in the gut-wrenching fashion they have.
This is not something that many people envisioned reading, but this game against Wake Forest is huge for ACC Tournament purposes. If the Hokies want to avoid playing on the first day again, then this is a must-win for them, or the Demon Deacons will hold the tiebreaker.
