When it came to recruiting in the Class of 2027, times are changing when it comes to Virginia Tech under James Franklin. The Hokies are now in on more of the better recruits around the country, and that is something that is only going to continue to happen.
Right before he was fired at Penn State, Franklin offered Class of 2027 elite athlete and four-star Carter Booner from Baltimore. Virginia Tech wasn't on his radar under Brent Pry and his staff, but the Hokies popped up on his radar after Franklin was hired in Blacksburg.
In February, Virginia Tech extended an offer to Bonner, and the Hokies were in play. On Monday afternoon, Bonner committed, and he is not coming to Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech recruit Carter Bonner commits to West Virginia
Bonner, who has a visit scheduled to Virginia Tech in June, committed to West Virginia and coach Rich Rodriguez over Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Oregon State, and Maryland. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Bonner will play at St. Frances Academy in the fall.
So far in the Class of 2027, the Hokies have been on a heater lately in terms of recruiting. Just in the last week, they have picked up commitments from running back Kelvin Morrison, before tight end Braxton Salster, and wide receiver Anthony Roberts committed. They joined a handful of defensive lineman that committed to the Hokies and first-year defensive line coach Sean Spencer and Pry, who is back as Franklin's defensive coordinator at Tech.
There are other commitments on the horizon for Virginia Tech this week, with Class of 2027 running back Stanley Smart from Georgia committing on Wednesday, with a final three of South Florida, Kansas State, and the Hokies. The next couple of months are going to be big in terms of recruiting for Franklin and his staff before the summer hits and fall camp begins in August.
