Going into the 2024 college football season, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones was talked about in the same breath as Cam Ward at Miami and Shedeur Sanders at Colorado. Unfortunately for Drones and the Hokies, his season did not come close to being as good as anyone expected.

The Baylor transfer two years ago struggled through inconsistency throughout the season and had his season cut short with injuries in November that saw him miss four out of the final five games, including the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota. Three weeks before the bowl game, head coach Brent Pry said that Drones and Pop Watson would both be returning for 2025, which was good news for the QB room.

Once fully healthy, Drones will be the projected starter for the Hokies going into the season, but it seems like a lot of steam off his hype train has quieted down. However, he is a long shot to win the Heisman Trophy next season according to one betting site.

Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones longshot to win 2025 Heisman Trophy

So you’re saying there’s a chance? Well, at least FanDuel does. Drones is a big longshot to win the Heisman Trophy next season with +9500 odds, which gives him just over a 1% chance to win the award. There is a chance.

Looking back on his 2024 season and looking ahead with all the roster turnover Virginia Tech has had on the offensive side of the ball, it’s hard to envision that Drones even comes close to being in the conversation for the award. He lost his top four wide receivers and running back, along with his offensive line. By now, you know that the offensive line wasn’t good and anything first-year offensive line coach Matt Moore can do will be an upgrade, we hope.

Going into a season with a lot of hype and expectations, Drones fell well short of that. It wasn’t all his fault. Could he have played better? Yes. Could he have had better coaching around him? Yes. Did anyone factor in an injury occurring? No. Regardless, he gets a fresh start in 2025 and who knows, maybe with less expectations, he’ll have a better season.
