With spring practices and the spring game in the books for Virginia Tech and first-year football coach James Franklin, all eyes will turn to recruiting. So far in the Class of 2027, the Hokies have commitments from five players, four along the defensive line and one running back. Then on Friday, a sixth player was added to the class in three-star tight end Braxton Salster from Alabama.
A running back and tight end were added on back-to-back days, and could a third straight player on the offensive side of the ball, this time a wide receiver, be added on Saturday? According to Evan Watkins of VTScoop, it's a real good possibility.
Virginia Tech picks up Crystal Ball prediction for Class of 2027 WR
After running back Kelvin Morrison and Salster committed on back-to-back days, Watkins submitted a Crystal Ball prediction on Friday for three-star wide receiver Anthony Roberts to pick the Hokies. This would be the seventh commit to the class if he chooses the Hokies.
This was a recruiting target for Franklin long before he was fired at Penn State. He was recruiting Roberts with the Nittany Lions, and the connection continued after he was hired at Virginia Tech. Roberts has made multiple trips to Blacksburg since Franklin was hired in mid-November and now he's closing in on a decision.
North Carolina State, Florida State, Duke, and Wake Forest are also in the mix, making this a heavy ACC recruiting battle. Roberts' father went to Duke, but it seems like wide receivers coach Fontel Mines and Franklin are making enough progress in his recruitment where Watkins felt comfortable enough to log a Crystal Ball prediction for Virginia Tech.
There are still some priority players in the Class of 2027 that Franklin and his staff are waiting for decisions on, but over the last couple of days, they have slowly built a solid class.
