Recruiting is beginning to take shape with the Class of 2027 for Virginia Tech and first-year head coach James Franklin. Now that he's in Blacksburg, the recruiting interest is growing in areas of the South where it didn't grow as much under the previous staff.

Franklin recently got a commitment from a recruit from Alabama in tight end Braxton Salster, earlier this week. One recruit that the Hokies are a finalist for is Class of 2027 three-star safety Elijah Butler. Currently, Virginia Tech has commits along the defensive line for new coach Sean Spencer, defensive coordinator Brent Pry, and Franklin, but along with Butler, they are in another heated battle with a couple of ACC schools and an SEC school for another Class of 2027 safety, Alex Scott, from Georgia.

Virginia Tech to host 3-star Class of 2027 safety Alex Smith

Along with Butler, the Hokies are in the mix and are going to host three-star safety Alex Scott in June. Three other schools where he's going to take visits are Louisville (May 29), North Carolina State (June 12), and a stop at Kentucky (June 19).

Scott is from Lyons, Georgia, and has put up some impressive numbers in his first three years of high school. He has racked up 269 tackles, 42 tackles for a loss, with four sacks, an interception, and nine forced fumbles. Last fall, he had 90 tackles, 15 for a loss.

The 5-foot-10.5 Smith was in Blacksburg for the Hokies' spring game a couple of weeks ago and already got a first-hand look for a weekend at what things look like under Franklin. Now he'll be back as part of his official visits late in the spring before the summer months hit and the dead period. It wouldn't be surprising to get a decision from him early in the summer. This would be a big addition to the class for Virginia Tech.
