Over the last couple of weeks, Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin has been cooking in recruiting. After getting his first few commitments on the defensive side of the ball, he has been hitting recruiting gold on the offensive side.
Last week, he added commitments at running back, tight end, and wide receiver. The running back was Kelvin Morrison from Pennsylvania. On Wednesday, Franklin and running backs coach Norval McKenzie picked up their second commitment in the Class of 2027.

Three-star Stanley Smart previously announced that he was down to three schools: Virginia Tech, South Florida, and Kansas State. South Florida was a fascinating team to be in the mix with the Hokies, as their former running backs coach, Elijah Brooks, was recently hired in Tampa. In the end, Smart committed to Virginia Tech, making the second running back to commit in a week.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Smart hails from Savannah, Georgia, and plays at Benedictine Military School, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards last season. He has a 4.46 40-yard dash. Why Virginia Tech? Smart explained to Kolby Crawford of VTScoop.
"When I went on the visit, it felt like home," Smart said. "I met with almost every staff member that I could think of. They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a priority."
So far, the Hokies have eight commitments in the Class of 2027, which is starting to come into shape. There are still a couple more months of some key visitors coming to Blacksburg, as well as some priority recruits they are waiting for decisions on. In previous seasons, the Hokies struggled to get commitments with skilled positions on offense, but under Franklin and his staff, times are changing in Blacksburg.
