Virginia Tech Basketball: Hokies Rout of Davidson Sets Up Showdown With Michigan
By Scott Roche
After winning five of their first six games to begin the 2024-25 season, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team was facing a good test in the Elevance Health Women's Fort Myers Tip-Off this weekend. The Hokies passed their first test with ease and will now have a much tougher test on Saturday night.
Rose Micheaux (nine rebounds) was one of three Hokies' who finished with 11 points along with Carys Baker and Kayl Petersen (six rebounds). Utah transfer Lani White had 10 points and Matilda Ehk had nine.
Virginia Tech took control right from the opening tip on both ends of the floor and sent an early statement to Davidson with a 29-point victory. Next up for Virginia Tech in Saturday night's championship game of the Shell Division is Michigan, which upended Belmont, 68-58, in the first semifinal Friday afternoon. The Hokies and Wolverines will play at 7:30.
Gut reactions from Virginia Tech's rout of Davidson
- Ekh was a huge part of setting the. tone on the offensive end with seven straight points and if she could find her range from behind the arc, the Hokies will be that much tougher to defend.
- Micheaux's improvement this year has been fun to watch and she has become a big presence at both ends of the floor.
- Baker's ability to play with her back to the basket this season has been getting better and better. She made a couple of nice turnaround shots after posting up with a nice touch.
- In the first half, Virginia Tech had 17 field goals and 10 assists. You love to see it.
- Talk about turning defense into offense. A 14-0 run to close out the first quarter was something to watch and runs like that will happen again this season.
- On Davidson's first two possessions, Carleigh Wenzel had a pair of steals. The Hokies intensity on the defensive end was something to watch.
- Once Samyha Suffren gets going downhill, good luck stopping her. She had a nice three-point play in the third quarter.
- White is getting more involved in the offense and she compliments the lineup very well both shooting and getting to the basket.
- Virginia Tech continues to do a great job at taking charges, even taking one up 33 points late in the game.
- Michigan is going to be a very tough test for the Hokies before heading to Georgia next week for the ACC/SEC Challenge. It's what you want to see this time of the year before conference play begins in just over a week at Duke.
