Now that the calendar has flipped to October, the college basketball season is inching closer with each passing day. Before the season begins in early November for both the Virginia Tech men's and women. Next week will be the ACC men's and women's basketball media days in Charlotte, and the attendees for the Hokies' men and women were announced.

Joining head coach Mike Young for the men will be Tobi Lawal, and transfers Jailen Bedford, and Armai Hansberry. On Monday morning, second-year head coach Megan Duffy will be joined by Carleigh Wenzel and Carys Baker.

Men's soccer picks up road victory

After eight days following a 3-1 loss at Stanford on Sept. 21, the Hokies' men's soccer team hit the road for a non-conference match at East Tennessee State and came away with a 1-0 victory.

Virginia Tech, which improved to 3-2-3 with the win, got a first-half goal from Dagur Traustason that ended up being the difference. The Hokies will hit the road again this upcoming weekend with an ACC match at Notre Dame.

Carpenter helps Tigers open Wild Card Series with win

Former Virginia Tech standout Kerry Carpenter got the scoring started for the Detroit Tigers in their 2-1 Game 1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. With two outs in the first inning, he singled and went to second on an outfield error. He scored on a Spencer Torkelson single. Game 2 of the series will be on Wednesday afternoon, and a win sends Carpenter and the Tigers to the ALDS against the Seattle Mariners.

Philip Montgomery explains energy change

Since Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry and named Philip Montgomery the interim coach, the vibes have been totally different around the Hokies. They have beaten Wofford and North Carolina State with a roster that has had players enter the transfer portal and players out injured.

"I think the guys have done a tremendous job of just rallying around each other,'' said Montgomery. "We're all in this together, and wins are hard to come by. So, you're talking about the other part of that. I mean, you need to be able to feel that joy that you get. They put in so much work and so much time, and they're grinding all the time.''

Virginia Tech is 2-3 on the season, and who knows how the final seven games will end up playing out, but one thing is for sure: they will be exciting and entertaining.
