It was another busy weekend in terms of news surrounding the Hokies.

This season, the transfer portal claimed six Virginia Tech men's basketball players so far. One of them was center Patrick Wessler, who came along this season in his development and could have been a decent replacement for the graduating Mylyjael Poteat next season.

Instead, Wessler entered the portal, and after being in there, he committed to UNC Wilmington for the next season. This season for the Hokies, the 7-foot-0 Matthews, N.C. native averaged 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds a game, but he played better than the stats say. He was a nice piece off the bench for Mike Young, but he should make a bigger contribution next season for the Seahawks.

Women's Lacrosse stuns nationally-ranked Syracuse

Entering this past weekend's contest at home against No. 11 Syracuse, the Hokies women's lacrosse team had lost all six games against ranked opponents. They lost to North Carolina, Boston College, Stanford, Duke, Clemson, and James Madison, and they were not about to drop a seventh after upsetting the Orange, 14-11, at Thompson Field.

Junior Lauren Render led the charge for the Hokies with seven goals, while sophomore Mia Pozzi added four. Senior goalie Aaliyah Jones recorded 13 saves for Virginia Tech, which improved to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. They will close the regular season on Wednesday night at Virginia at 7 o'clock in a game that will be broadcast on the ACC Network.

Virginia Tech loses another transfer portal battle to UCF

Last spring, Virginia Tech men's basketball got a portal commitment from guard Jordan Ivy-Curry, only to have him re-enter the portal a short time later before committing to Central Florida. In this cycle, the Hokies were in on Milwaukee guard Themus Fulks, but again, Mike Young was passed on for Johnny Dawkins and the Knights.

Jon Rothstein reported on Saturday night that Fulks committed to UCF. This season for Milwaukee, he averaged 14.6 points, 5.9 assists, and three rebounds a night, and he would have been a nice backcourt addition to mentor youngster Ben Hammond.
