It's been a couple of weeks since the Virginia Tech men's basketball season ended, and five players have entered the transfer portal. This is the second year in a row where head coach Mike Young will be busy looking for players to build a roster for next season.
There are no shortage of needs for the Hokies, but expect Young to be aggressive this portal window with a bigger NIL package. Last week, he sent a message on the Virginia Tech Men's Basketball X account that he's committed to turning things around and doing it quickly.
The number of players who have entered the portal this window is nuts and it gets bigger and bigger by the day. That gives schools more options of players to pick from. So far there have been some players who have been linked to the Hokies and here are foour of them.
Robert McCray V - Jacksonville
One player who Young and his staff got an up close look at was Jacksonville guard Robert McCray back in November. The Dolphins came into Cassell Coliseum and dominated the second half in a 74-64 victory. It was one of the more brutal non-conference losses that Virginia Tech had this season, and that's saying a lot.
McCray finished that game with 17 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. This season, he averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists a gamein 29.7 minutes. Pairing him in the backcourt with Ben Hammond would be tough for teams to defend. He would also provide the Hokies with another ball-hander to play and create chances for Jaden Schutt. It feels like this is a player to watch in the portal for the Hokies.
Kezza Giffa - High Point
One player who is generating a lot of interest in the portal is High Point's Kezza Giffa. The Paris, France native averaged 14.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game for the Panthers, leading them to the NCAA Tournament.
In the big dance, Giffa had eight points, three assists, and three rebounds in a first-round loss to Purdue in the Midwest Regional. He is another good ball-handler who would fit right in the Virginia Tech backcourt, but there are a lot of programs after him with one year of eligibility remaining.
Themus Fulks - Milwaukee
Another guard, Themus Fulks is a play-maker who has one year remaining aftet this season at Milwaukee. He averaged 14.6 points a game this season, 3 rebounds and 5.9 assists. He has bounced around the portal after beginning at South Carolina State before going to Louisiana.
Like McCray, he is another play-making talented guard who is what the Hokies need. He can score going to the basket, he can shoot from the outside and sees the floor very well. He is coming off a season where he saw a huge bump in his stats in the Horizon League. He is highly-sought after in the portal and Young has his work cutout for him in his recruiting.
