Coming off a 35-33 loss to Pittsburgh at home on Friday night, the Virginia Tech footbal team will look to rebound next weekend at California. However, the big story coming out of the game for James Franklin and the Hokies was the game-winning field goal attempt missed by John Love, as well as four turnovers and penalties.
However, for the Panthers, the biggest story is going to be the loss of quarterback Mason Heintschel for the season with a torn ACL he sustained on the opening drive of the second half. It's a huge loss for coach Pat Narduzzi and his club, but it wasn't a dirty play, like most PItt fans claim it was.
It was a clean tackle with a player trying to reach for a first down. He wasn't out of bounds, and you can bet that if the roles were reversed, Pitt fans would say it was a clean hit. It's a tough loss for a 5-0 team. Narduzzi did get his wish; his team was ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday after the win in Blacksburg, coming in at No. 23. I'm sure he slept well on Sunday night. Here's hoping Heintschel makes a full recovery.
ACC hot-seat coaches pick up some key wins
Five weeks into the season, some ACC coaches are still on the hot seat, but for one week, a couple might have taken some of the heat off of them for now. Florida State fell behind Virginia, 7-0, but scored the final 38 points of the game for a 38-7 victory.
North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren has some heat on him, but with a 31-28 win over Louisville got his team to 3-2 and ended any shot the Cardinals had at reaching the ACC Championship Game in December. There will be other coaches on the hot seat as the season goes along.
