Was it good?

Trailing Pittsburgh 35-33 on Friday night at Lane Stadium, the Virginia Tech football team had the game on the foot on senior placekicker John Love. He had a 36-yard game-winning field goal attempt from the right hash with three seconds left.

Love is one of the better kickers in college football and is expected to hear his name called at the NFL Draft next spring. He has been close to money during his Virginia Tech career. It was supposed to be a chip shot to win the game. Until it wasn't. Or was it?

Love's kick sailed toward the left upright and appeared to be good in real time, but the referee under the goal post said it was no good and the Panthers won 35-33. Love thought he made the kick and after looking at a number of replays, he just might have.

Was John Love's game-winning goal-field attempt really wide left?

On the end zone shot from behind the play on the ESPN broadcast, it appeared to have snuck it in. Then this view shows that the ball snuck inside the goalpost for the win. You be the judge.

Virginia Tech fans feel that he made the kick and have a legit argument. Sadly, it's not a reviewable play. If it was, how could they have overturned it?

So here's the thing: it was a gut-wrenching loss, but truth be told, the Hokies should never have been in that position to begin with. Turnovers, penalties, questionable play-calling all led to Virginia Tech blowing a 14-0 early lead.

The Hokies' defense struggled to get stops, even after Mason Heintschel went down with an injury on the first drive of the second half. Give Pitt credit: they forced the turnovers, cashed in, and didn't finish drives with touchdowns as Pitt did. It's a gut-wrenching loss, but the Love kick will be talked about for weeks and years to come. The debate will go on just like it did a few years ago at Miami.
