Since being hired as the next athletic director at Virginia Tech, replacing Whit Babcock, Brian White has hit the ground running in Blacksburg. He has been assembling a nice staff around him, and that continued this week.
White hired PJ Mullen as Virginia Tech's Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Marketing Officer, while also serving on Virginia Tech Athletics' executive leadership team. He will also oversee ACC Network broadcasting operations. These moves might not seem like much, but they are moves that are going to pay off down the line. They are also moves that are helping Virginia Tech Athletics turn a corner and be much more competitive.
“I’m incredibly excited for Virginia Tech Athletics and for PJ as he steps into this role,” head football coach James Franklin said in a school-issued statement. “I’ve known PJ for a long time, and I can tell you he’s one of the most creative, energetic and passionate people I’ve been around. He has a unique ability to combine vision with execution, building experiences that energize fans, strengthening a program’s brand and bringing people together around a common purpose.''
Things continue to roll in the right direction in Blacksburg.
Luke Reynolds lands on Mackey Award watch list
One of the more anticipated new players that fans are looking forward to seeing play in 2026 is Penn State tight end transfer Luke Reynolds. In 13 games for the Nittany Lions last season, the Massachusetts native had 26 catches for 257 yards.
Expected to have a big first season in Blacksburg, Reynolds was listed on the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award, which recognizes the nation's most outstanding tight end. The award has been handed out to the nation's top player at his position; Reynolds should thrive under offensive coordinator and former tight end coach at Penn State, Ty Howle.

- College soccer begins this month, and Virginia Tech's men's and women's teams are looking for strong starts to the season. As far as how good the ACC will be for both, well, that remains to be seen, but a couple of polls released compound how tough things could be. On the men's side, NC State (No. 2), Stanford (No. 9), Virginia (No. 11) and SMU (No. 15) were each ranked in the Preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll. On the women's side, Stanford (No. 1), Notre Dame (No. 2), Duke (No. 3), Florida State (No. 4), North Carolina (No. 8), Virginia (No. 11), Wake Forest (No. 18), and Clemson (No. 25) were ranked in the Preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll.
- It is never too early to get some college basketball news. The ACC released the schedule for teams at the 2026 ACC Tip-Off in Charlotte, which will be held on Oct. 5, 6, and 7. As far as Megan Duffy and the Hokies' women are concerned, they will meet with the media on Oct. 5 in the PM session, while Mike Young and the men will meet with the media on Oct. 7, also in the PM session.
