It was a busy weekend for the Virginia Tech athletic programs with the women's basketball team picking up massive road wins and the softball team dominating the opening weekend at the plate and in the circle. We'll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News with a college basketball analyst's thoughts on the women's basketball tournament chances.

ESPN analyst impressed with Hokies women's basketball team

When the women's basketball team played at Virginia on Sunday, analyst Kelly Gramlich was on the call of the ACC Network. Without center, Rose Micheaux, Virginia Tech rolled to a 25-point win over the Cavaliers to earn a season split, but it was in the fashion they did it that impressed Gramlich.

Tech had 26 assists on 31 field goals while placing four players in double figures as they led from the midway point of the opening quarter until the final horn. Entering the game, ESPN's Charlie Creme had the Hokies as the last team in his bracketology, but Gramlich posted on X that they are a tournament team.

During the broadcast, Gramlich noted that the NCAA Tournament committee needs to take into consideration the Hokies missing Micheaux in their loss to Syracuse and winning on the road without her in Charlottesville.

Emma Lemley fired perfect game in softball's weekend dominance

The Hokies softball team had a perfect start to the 2025 season, literally. Virginia Tech won all five games over the weekend in the Charleston Invitational by outscoring their opponents, 50-0. As impressive as the offensive output was, it was a perfect Sunday afternoon in the circle for pitcher Emma Lemley.

She fired the eighth perfect game in program history on Sunday in the Hokies 10-0 win over the College of Charleston. She struck out eight of the 15 batters she faced and was aided at the plate by Bre Peck who had a three-run homer. The Hokies return to the field Tuesday at Elon.

Women's lacrosse opens season with rout of VCU

Behind seven goals from Lauren Render, who also had two assists, the Hokies women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 15-7 win over VCU. Maura O'Malley had five assists for Virginia Tech, which scored their most goals in a season-opener since scoring 17 against Davidson in 2020. Tech will host James Madison in their home opener on Wednesday night at Thompson Field at 5 p.m.
